Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) tried unsuccessfully “to enter a federal immigration facility in Texas” and he recorded the whole attempt on video. The problem was, as Fox News has reported, the liberal senator was “irresponsibly spreading blatant lies about routine immigration enforcement,” according to the White House.
The Department of Justice has not agreed with Merkley that he is “being systematically barred from immigrant detention centers” and they had welcomed him to visit only last Sunday.
Over one million people have seen the footage of the senator approaching the “Office of Refugee Resettlement facility in Brownsville, Texas.” He had falsely claimed that the treatment of the children there was “unacceptable,” a claim based on nothing at all.
In an act that would have led most people into jail for at least criminal trespassing charges, Merkely attempted to follow someone who was authorized to be in the building, inside. He was told that the area was “private property” and that he had to go.
The building being used was once a Walmart and the windows are blacked out, according to reports. Since sleeping is done in the building, that is not strange.
The haughty senator attempted to throw his weight around and called the number to the center. He started making demands for a tour, too, only to meet “Mr. Click.” He confirmed this when he said, “Well, she just hung up on me.”
Perhaps barking demands was not the best approach. Then again, neither was trying to sneak in.
Soon, the police arrived, ran Merkley’s information, and told him that he had to leave. The Democrat protested and said, “And the attorney general’s team, and the Office of Refugee Resettlement, they don’t want anyone to know about what’s going on behind these doors.”
“Senator Merkley is irresponsibly spreading blatant lies about routine immigration enforcement while smearing hardworking, dedicated law enforcement officials at ICE and CBP,” stated deputy White House press secretary Hogan Gidley.
He added, “He voted against closing the ‘catch-and-release’ loopholes used by child smugglers, and his reckless open borders policies are responsible for the permanent separation of thousands of American families who have been forced to bury their loved ones. No one is taking a public safety lecture from Sen. Merkley, whose own policies endanger children, empower human smugglers and drug cartels, and allow violent criminal aliens to flood into American communities.”
President Trump himself has called the separations “horrible.”
“We appreciate the Senator’s interest in the subject, and are happy to provide him with an understanding of the immigration process: DHS follows the laws passed by Congress and processes alien children safely and humanely,” said DHS press secretary Tyler Houlton. “Contrary to any misinformation campaign, the safety of children is paramount for DHS.”
“At 2 pm on a Friday, the Senator asked to visit a secure DHS facility over the weekend where children are present and we worked with him to provide him access,” Houlton also stated. “This presented obvious and serious privacy concerns – not to mention disrupting operations. He was able to visit the facility on Sunday.”
At least that answered the question as to why the senator could not just barge in, and it had nothing to do with abused children.
“When I was at the center at McAllen Border Station, this is the processing center, earlier and I was admitted there and I did see the people, hundreds of children locked up in cages there at that facility. They have big cages made out of fencing and then wire and nets stretched across the top of them so people can’t climb out of them.” Merkley said.
Oddly enough, the photos that he saw and which caused his outrage were taken during the Obama years, not Mr. Trump’s.
Merkley opined in a Facebook video that “Every American citizen has a stake in how these children are being treated and how this policy is being enacted.”
Communications Director Ray Zaccaro declared, “The White House is smearing Senator Merkley because they can’t defend their indefensible policy of snatching children from their parents. Senator Merkley and his staff saw children in cages yesterday at the DHS processing center. We still have no idea what’s happening in the detention center where reportedly up to a thousand children are being held, since they refused the Senator’s request to go inside.”
While it does seem to look somewhat fishy that the senator needs to make an appointment, the bigger picture is that some of those cells may have been there because the youths are violent. Also, it must be remembered that if their families had not tried to sneak into the United States illegally, none of this would be even happening.
That, more than anything, is what angers liberals the most.
I’m going to try to enter a facility in Brownsville, TX run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement. I am told that this former Walmart may currently be housing hundreds of refugee children who have been separated from their parents.
