Chad Corby of Roanoke, Virginia couldn’t believe it when he saw his neighbor Clarence Kakert on his front porch begging for help. 70-year-old Kakert is lucky that Corby was around or the outcome might have been much worse. He told officers that he was attacked and then tied up. His assailant proceeded to ransack the apartment and set it on fire before escaping.
Kakert allegedly knows the man who police think is responsible, Omar Romance-Lomax Martin. He says Martin had been asking him for money before the assault. The 20-year-old is now being sought. When he is caught he will face charges of arson and malicious wounding.
Mr. Corby told reporters about the terrifying scene that occurred;
“He was tied and bound, covered in blood. He told me somebody came in, asked to borrow some money. He told them he couldn’t do it. They didn’t like that answer, proceeded to beat the crap out of him, bound him, threw him in his tub, and caught his house on fire.”
Somehow Kakert made it to the porch where he was seen by Corby who then ran and got a knife to cut the man free. Corby stated the older man was “standing, bound, had a belt tied around his ankles. He had an oxygen cord and a phone cord tied around his wrists.” The oxygen cord used to bind Kakert was his own, police report he uses it, putting him at even more risk.

Although Kakert was not grievously injured, if he had not been helped out of his burning apartment, he may not have survived his vicious encounter with Martin.
Corby was shaken by the incident but glad that his neighbor was going to recover;
“The fire was scary enough, but to see him covered in blood and the thought that someone would try to rob and kill him was unreal.”
